ANNO Internet

Making our Web Server Secure

The information that is transferred between your web server and a person visiting your web site may pass through many different computers as it crosses the Internet. As a result, it is possible that someone may attempt to intercept this information.

Even if you are personally not concerned about this threat (it is actually quite rare), visitors to your Web site may be very concerned. Therefore, in cases where you are transmitting sensitive information, we recommend you use the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol with your virtual server's HTTP service.

What is SSL?

SSL is an industry-standard way of passing sensitive information between computers. It is often used to securely transfer credit card numbers and other sensitive information across the Internet. Because Netscape developed it, SSL is also referred to as Netscape Encryption. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL.

Do I need to purchase a Digital Certificate?

Before you can run SSL on your web server, you must first gain access to a Digital ID (also known as a Digital Certificate). You can obtain a Digital ID from a certificate authority such as VeriSign or Thawte. Prices of digital certificates vary. A FREE alternative is available via our Shared Cert certificate.

Using ANNO's Shared Digital Certificate

If you don't want to purchase your own Digital Certificate, you can use our shared certificate at no extra charge (setup and monthly fee still apply). The domain name associated with the shared certificate is "secure.anno.com".

To use it without warning, an account is setup in a special way. You will then be able to reference your secure web pages using the address "https://secure.anno.com/~yourname", where "yourname" is a username of your choice. The username is limited to a maximum of eight characters.
